Sensitive Teeth
What is sensitivity? This is a condition in which there is a sudden, sharp pain from deep within the tooth when cold, hot, sour or sweet foods enter the mouth.
If this pain persists after checking for old fillings and cavities, it indicates that the root of the tooth is being exposed as a result of receding gums.
The leading cause of gum recession is rough tooth brushing action. For this reason, it is important not to apply too much pressure to teeth when brushing and to use circular motions. Also, sensitivity may occur as a result of chipped teeth, gingival disease or grinding/clenching at night, which causes the roots of teeth to become exposed.
What measures can be taken to relieve sensitivity?Patients should use toothbrushes of medium hardness as well as toothpastes specially designed to relieve sensitivity. Avoid consuming highly acidic foods and drinks. If the problem persists after taking these measures, contact your dentist. For treatment, dentists isolate the exposed root, apply a fluoride coating and either heal the root surface or use filling material to restore deteriorating layers of the tooth.
