Topical Fluoride Application
What is topical fluoride application?Fluoride is an element that prevents tooth decay and strengthens teeth. Although fluoride is found in toothpastes, children often have a low resistance to decay and get cavities because they brush irregularly or don’t brush well. In order to build resistance to decay, extra fluoride needs to be applied in order compensate for an absence of the element. For this reason, a preventative amount of fluoride is applied under the supervision of a dentist. The teeth then store the element, which strengthens the teeth and builds their resistance to cavities.
When and how often should it be applied?Fluoride may be applied after all baby teeth have erupted. Topical fluoride application is only effective when done three times per yearwith a three-week waiting period between each application. It is an easy, painless procedure.
